Traffic. Traffic. Traffic.
Winter conditions, snow plows, busses, and emergency vehicles bring steadily increasing traffic on our roads. Our expressways rank among the most congested in the country. Plus, winter weather means messy windshields, navigating potholes, slush thrown from passing 16-wheelers, snow drifts, black ice, disabled vehicles, and more rush-hour driving in the dark.
It’s no surprise that along with the increased congestion and poorer road conditions, there is an increase in crashes, collisions, and auto accidents.
As an attorney, every day I am personally involved in fighting for those who are injured as a result of the negligence of others. Injuries from car accidents can be severe and life-changing.
Chicagoland Car Accident Liability.
Anyone injured in an automobile accident has the right to receive compensation from the at-fault driver. If you’re injured in an auto accident, here’s a checklist that will assist you.
What To Do Checklist.
√ Police. Always call the police – even if the accident appears minor. After their investigation, the officer will issue a police report. A police report is very important to your case.
√ Get Information & Photos. Never leave the scene of an accident without taking photos and collecting the names and contact information of witnesses. Most cell phones today have cameras that you can use to photograph vehicle positions, body damage, tire marks, and road conditions. Be very sensitive to photographing signs, lane and turn markings on the street that may be obscured by piles of snow, water, or poorly parked vehicles.
√ Medical Treatment. You and your passengers may be in shock, confused, or scared. When you call the police, their dispatcher can also send an ambulance for emergency treatment. Take photos of any cuts, bruises, or physical injuries that may not be part of the medical report and X-rays.
√ Hire an Attorney. Contact an attorney experienced in Personal Injury cases. Do not wait. We help you avoid mistakes that may weaken your case. We also help you keep track your medical treatment, ensure that no legal deadlines are missed, advise you on realistic compensation, and keep the case moving forward.
√ Report. Notify your insurance company and provide the police report number. In Illinois, you must complete and mail a report to the Secretary of State. We assist with these details. There is a deadline for filing your case.
√ Document. Create a folder for all details of the accident. Photos, diagrams, witnesses, medical records, treatments, prescriptions, travel expenses, lost wages, car rental, and other expenses. Also record how you are feeling during your recovery. Your attorney will find this information enormously helpful in investigating and holding the responsible party accountable.
Print this checklist and keep it in the glove box of your car. You’ll thank me if you’re in an auto accident.
